Lake Kariba is the second largest man-made lake in the world. Located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, it is easily accessible by air or road. Lake Kariba is a great holiday destination in Zimbabwe, and offers visitors a variety of activities. Below are the five things you can do whilst in Kariba.
1. Go on a boat cruise
It goes without saying, but if you’re on the lake, you have to do a boat cruise. Depending on how much time (and money) you have, there are options to suit your preferences. You can go on a sunset cruise, or you can book an entire house boat and spend the night. There are so many boats to choose from, so look out for updates from Thingu to see which you will be able to book.
2. Try fishing
Take a bet to see who can get the biggest catch in the lake. Lake Kariba is famous for it’s Tiger fish, but there is a wide variety of fish in the lake. Some even say you can catch fish as big as a small child, but there is only one way to find out if this is true! You can hire a speed boat, or fish whilst on a boat charter. Take a picture and tag us on social media @thinguafrica! The best part of fishing (for me anyway) is eating your catch! Have a great fish recipe you can share? Post it in the comments so others can try too.
3. Take a tour of Kariba
There are other things to see in the town of Kariba, and you’d do well to go on tour of the town. Visit the Observation Point, which has a small “museum” to learn about how the dam was constructed and the history of the Tonga people. You can also visit the St Barbara church up the Heights. On a clear day, you can see 40% of the lake on the Monument, and some of the islands on the lake.
4. Enjoy a game drive
While you’re not going to see the big five, you can see elephants, zebras and many other antelope. You can head to the Charara safari area for your game drive. Just be sure to bring your camera and binoculars. You can be accompanied by a guide or self-drive. There is a crocodile farm there as well, and you can see quite a few of the crocodiles quite easily through a fence.
5. Bird watching
The fish eagle easily serves as the emblem of the lake. It is one of the many bird species that bird watchers can expect to see whilst in Kariba.
